First ... A Word About Community Spay and Neuter Programs

A major challenge for those who care about the welfare of dogs and other pets is overpopulation. There are simply more animals being born than homes for them to go to. The result? -- needless suffering. The solution is spay and neuter.

We believe a strong community spay and neuter program is vital to Victoria and surrounding communities. A community spay and neuter program helps those pet owners who do their best but simply cannot afford to spay and neuter their animals. It also helps stray animals that end up being found by people who are willing to keep them and provide them with a loving home but need help with the initial expenses to make them healthy after their frightening ordeal. This often includes a range veterinary attention as well as spaying or neutering.

As a community, Victoria is very lucky to have two dedicated Spay and Neuter Societies that volunteer endless hours and financial support to low-income people and to the stray animals in our community: Victoria Cat Rescue Corps (250.656.1100) and Greater Victoria Animals' Crusaders (250.474.5581). With the Victoria SPCA Spay and Neuter Clinic closing its doors in 2003 these two organizations have shouldered all responsibility for Victoria's spay and neuter programs. Your donations to these groups are tax-deductible and will ensure the continuation of the most vital program to prevent suffering in our community.

Therapy

P.A.T.S. volunteers take their pets to visit at retirement homes, hospitals and other facilities where residents benefit from interaction with pets. All P.A.T.S. therapy pets are behaviour tested before they are accepted into the program.

The benefits of interaction with pets are many. Visits with therapy pets encourage reminiscences and social interaction, and result in stress relief and incidental physiotherapy.

Responsible Dog Owners of Canada (RDOC) (Ottawa)

Founded in 1999, the organization's primary mandate was to promote and maintain off leash privileges on lands governed by the National Capital Commission. Successful in securing a larger and greater number of dog friendly areas, the organization is turning its focus on the promotion of responsible dog ownership through education. The focal point now for the group is developing and hosting educational programs and workshops like the Dog Owner Training School (D.O.T.S.), DOG-ED, Canadian Canine Good Citizenship Test (CCGC) and a Dog Bite Prevention Program.

For much more information, visit the RDOC's website at www.responsibledogowners.ca.

Sports

Capital Comets Dog Sports Club

Established in 1990, the Comets were the first dog sports club in Victoria, British Columbia. They are a non-profit society whose goal is to have fun with our dogs while promoting responsible dog ownership through Agility and Flyball.

They support the needs of members who want to compete in either dog sport, as well as those who just want to have fun with their dogs.

The Club is affiliated with the North American Flyball Association (NAFA) and the Agility Association of Canada (AAC).

Over Citizen Canine's short history, Capital Comets have been an invaluable source of support. They have made both generous financial donations, and have offered a number of their excellent demonstrations. We thank them!

Check the club out at www.homestead.com/capitalcomets

Obedience

The North Saanich Dog Obedience Training Club (NOSA)

The North Saanich Dog Obedience Training Club — or NOSA, for short — is the second-oldest dog obedience club in B.C.'s Capital Regional District (after the Greater Victoria Dog Obedience Training Club).

NOSA not only shows dog owners how to train their pets; the club also teaches and promotes responsible dog ownership among its members and the community alike. NOSA also has a second component as a competition club. Over the years, members have placed in Canadian Kennel Club national obedience rankings.

NOSA is one of only four dog obedience clubs in the Capital Regional District sanctioned by the Canadian Kennel Club to stage licensed dog obedience trials. The club holds this trial every April.

For more information, visit NOSA's website at www.nosa.ca.
